Spoonface Steinberg - by Lee Hall

A monologue first transmitted on Radio 4, this is the story of a young autistic Jewish girl. After learning that she is terminally ill with cancer, she becomes fascinated by dramatic stage deaths in opera and inspired by the dignity and courage of people who died in Nazi concentration camps.

The humour is that the tragic situation (father's affair, mother's vodka drinking, disabled child dying of cancer) is all seen through Spoonface's eyes and thus has the innocent, dispassionate feel that an adult would lack. Desperate situations are made to seem okay & the whole thing is suffused in opera & a background of the suffering in the holocaust.
